Social Determinants of Health Among Indigenous Peoples in Alberta

 

The aim of this project was to conduct a systematic review that included reviewing published and grey literature on the social

determinants of health among Indigenous peoples in Alberta.

SODIUM-HF Pilot Study (in partnership with Dr. Justin Ezekowitz, Director of the Heart Function Clinic, University of Alberta)

This 6-month pilot randomized controlled trial assessed the benefits of a low sodium diet versus a moderate sodium diet on QOL, BNP levels, diuretic dosage, NYHA class, and composite clinical outcomes. The rationale for the study was to determine the optimal level of sodium retention in heart failure patients and inform sample size calculations for a larger randomized controlled trial.

WHY ACT NOW

This project worked to adequately address the challenges faced by urban Indigenous and new Canadian youth, and developed, implemented, and evaluated an evidence-based program with four partner groups (youth, community advisory board, Indigenous organizations, and the government). This proposal will also add to the very limited data for the health of urban Indigenous and new Canadian youth in Edmonton.

Cancer ACCESS

The Cancer ACCESS Project aimed to identify thoughts and attitudes toward cancer and cancer screening services among Indigenous peoples living in remote Arctic communities. Additionally, this study highlighted the barriers that exist to screening, found ways to increase cancer screening uptake levels and, ultimately, worked to improve cancer awareness.

Caring and Responding Edmonton: The CARE Project

Through the Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation, the Indigenous and Global Health Research Group received funding  to work with community partners to improve the experience of accessing health and wellness services, with a focus on Edmonton’s most vulnerable populations.
